Do you wish you had better memory? Try out some of these strategies and see if they help.
- Get more sleep. It helps make stronger connections between the neurons in your brain. Aim for 7-9 hours (including naps - yes, they're ok for adults) a day.
- Exercise. Cardiovascular activity for 20-30 minutes 3x/week has been shown to improve memory functions, because it gets blood flowing to your brain and encourages growth in the hippocampus (the part of the brain responsible for memory).
- Eat healthy (and it's ok to drink in moderation). Vitamin C, some antioxidants, and moderate alcohol consumption (one drink per day) have all been correlated with increased memory function.
- Supplement with fish oil. DHA is an omega-3 that is important for brain health. Vitamin D, folic acid, B6, and B12 have also been associated with improved brain function.
- Relax. Meditation helps improve focus and helps lower stress, both things that will improve your recall.
- Change it up. When we learn new hobbies or go new places, it forges new connections in our brains, which help it grow healthier.
- Medicate wisely. Some drugs inhibit memory function, so talk to your doctor if you recently started a new medication and find yourself forgetful.
