My kids, husband, and I went to a screening of The Odd Life of Timothy Green last night. We had an enjoyable evening. From the few ads I'd seen, the movie looked really cute, but we didn't know what to expect (except my kindergarten daughter knew that Timothy came from the garden).
The movie has a whimsical tone whenever it centers on Timothy, an odd little boy who definitely doesn't quite fit in. There are a lot of elements to the storyline woven together: the father's relationship with his dad, the budding romance with Timothy and a girl from school, the trouble with the factory in a small town, the rivalry between the mother and her sister. And the movie is fairly predictable in terms of how it will end, but it was still well done and kept our attention to the end.
If you're prone to cry at movies, though, this one is a tear-jerker. My preschooler didn't really pick up on it - she really only picked up on the funny parts - but my kindergartener did. So it actually opened up quite a dialogue on the way home about families and life events. It also made me very grateful for the family I have.
The movie is rated PG and is appropriate for pretty much all ages. There are a couple scenes of mild bullying, and some mild arguments, but no major violence or language issues. If you're watching it with young children, you may need to be ready to answer some questions about things that happen in the movie, but I didn't regret taking my two daughters.
Disclosure: I received complimentary screening tickets to facilitate this review.
