Website Spotlight: Mom2Mommy

Have you heard of Mom2Mommy? Founders Elaine Iwicki and  Kelly Harper are both busy mothers and entrepreneurs. While balancing careers and raising children, they noticed a gap in resources available to moms who needed convenient information about health, and found that many parents were looking to have stronger relationships with their care providers.

They are passionate about building a community of physicians, medical professionals, boutiques, and baby product manufacturers who want to join a trusted network of resources available to moms across the nation. The site is the first and only website to connects moms directly with doctors at no expense. It's targeted for moms with children ages 0-15.

The site will also feature unique boutique items for purchase. Boutique owners will be featured at no cost and will be able to advertise their specialty goods to physicians and parents. From baby products to adult apparel, Mom2mommy will serve as an online shopping resource with home delivery available for busy moms.

I had an opportunity to interview the Kelly Harper, VP of Mom2Mommy.

1) What was the inspiration for creating this site?
Our inspiration for the site was our children. We were looking for a site where parents can go and get credible information, be able to ask professionals questions, and have a user friendly less is more feel to it. We have found that there is a need for our site, every parent wants to do the best for their children and have questions along the way, we wanted to help parents navigate through answers in addition to getting professionals to communicate answers and advice. Between the questions we've had throughout both of our pregnancy's (Braxton-Hicks contractions, cramping, exhaustion etc.) which were answered mostly by friends and family, coupled with the fact that Kelly lives in a small town with one pediatrician office within a 200 mile radius, who she believes to be inadequate, we both saw a need for information on-line that is both easy to find and reliable. We also realized that now days, everything people need is accessible on-line except doctors (themselves) and medical information. Then after a couple of glasses of wine at the Cheesecake Factory with 3 crazy toddlers running wild, we decided that a site like this is exactly what every parent needs and would be a lot of fun to build.

2) How easy has it been to get care providers on board?
We have had the opportunity to canvas is 4 states, the feedback and excitement about the site is unbelievable. I feel that almost all of the physicians that we have left information with and spoke with are interested and see the need for the site. We have gotten a few physicians signed up before our site has gone live, but most are going to wait till the site is up and running. Our site will have an area where a physician can sign up using all their information. Once they are signed up and have created a user name and password they will be able to upload articles and start participating in the parenting forum, giving advice and helping future patients.

3) What is your personal favorite feature of the site and why?
My personal feature of the site is the forum, it has all stages, and common topics that parents, professionals can ask questions, put in advice, give experience or medical information. As a parent, I feel that getting all outlooks, and suggestions on a topic that I am researching is great and helps me make the best decisions for my children. I also have a friend with a down syndrome baby, our site has a special needs sections and I feel parents will not feel alone, and get great information along with support from other parents in the same situation or from physicians with professional insight.

4) Why did you decide to combine a health and wellness site with a marketplace?
We want our site to be a one-stop shop for moms. We thought the boutiques would be a great hit and be helpful to small business owners. We like the idea of featuring merchandise that isn't at Target and Wal-Mart and can be a find that parents didn't even know they were looking for. We added this as a cool feature of the site.
