Soul Sustenance: Divine Intuition

Do you often second-guess yourself, only to make the wrong decision - or do you have a hard time trusting the decisions you make, whether or not they seem logical? There's a new book, Divine Intuition: Your Inner Guide to Purpose, Peace, and Prosperity, that can help you learn to listen to your intuition. I had a chance to interview the author, Lynn Robinson, to find out more.

1) With a title like "Divine Intuition" people might assume that there's a religious emphasis in the book. Is it suitable for a particular religion, or applicable to all?
Intuition is a rich resource for acquiring knowledge about yourself and the world around you. It provides profound guidance that allows you to make the best choices for yourself and your family. When you listen to intuition and follow its wisdom you’ll be led to a life that is abundant, successful and full of limitless possibilities. It’s not about a specific religion, but more of a spiritual approach to life. Intuition is a connection to your soul, a vehicle for God to communicate with you. When you ask your intuition for help or insight, you are tapping into your Higher Power and seeking its wise guidance. I refer to it as "Divine Intuition."

2) What exactly is our intuition?

Intuition comes in many forms. It communicates in different ways to each of us. “Mother’s Intuition” is especially important in keeping our kids safe and out of trouble. Always best to heed it’s wisdom! Following are some of the ways intuition makes itself known.
  • Inner Voice - Many people report a "still, quiet, inner voice." Your intuition will always communicate with you in a compassionate, loving manner that is perceptibly different from your normal inner chatter.
  • Dreams - You can receive a wealth of guidance when you learn to ask for intuitive insight from your dreams.
  • Emotions - Intuitive information often comes through your feelings or emotions. You may simply “feel right” about a certain course of action. Or you might experience a sense of distrust about an individual or situation.
  • Physical sensations - We call such sensations a “gut feeling.” You might find that your body feels heavy if a decision you’ve made is wrong. Your body may feel light or experience "chills" if it is the correct path for you.
  • Instant knowing - You may receive a sudden flash of understanding. The answer wasn’t there and the next moment it is!
  • Symbols - Intuition often comes to us in symbolic images. It is often said that, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” You might receive a symbolic impression of a rocky road if you choose “Path A.” If you choose the alternative “Path B,” you may see a clear, smooth path in your mind’s eye.
3) How can we tap more into it?

Meditation is helpful. So is simply sitting quietly for one to five minutes. Taking slow deep breaths. Being in nature. We often think of intuition as coming unbidden. However, we can get really helpful information from our intuition when we ask open-ended questions such as, “How can I…(be happier, help my child, find a wonderful new job?). Or simply, “What is the right next step?” Intuitive answers don’t usually come immediately. They come when you least expect them! They may pop into your mind when you wake up, while you’re in the shower, when you’re doing the dishes, while you’re walking your child to the school bus.

4) What are some easy techniques we can try if it's hard to trust our intuition?
I have a lot of video intuition techniques on my website. Here’s a quick one to try: If a decision or idea feels heavy, boring or draining, that’s your intuition telling you to move away from that choice or not make it in the first place. If a decision or idea feels exciting, interesting, or has energy, that’s your intuition telling you to go in that direction. That way points you to more success and happiness! Intuition is always encouraging you to open up, try something new and be the best you can be. It consistently points the way to success. We all want a sure thing, a guarantee that the risk we take will work out okay. But life isn't like that. It requires that you develop faith and courage so you can grow big enough emotionally and spiritually to live your dreams.
