Soul Sustenance: Upside-Down Prayers for Parents

If you're religious, you probably pray for your kids, even if it's quick prayers like, "Keep them safe." Upside-Down Prayers for Parents challenges that. It encourages parents to pray for things that seem counter-intuitive, like losing friends, struggling, and failing. Lisa Bergen, the author, explains that we want our children to grow up safe, of course, but also that we want them to learn to trust God even in the face of struggles.

Each prayer is prefaced by a short devotion that takes just a few minutes to read and digest, and really encourages us to grow as parents, recognizing that sometimes, even the pain our children (and we ourselves) experience can have a purpose. You can read chapter one here to get a taste of the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the chapters I have so far, and it's really helped me take a new look at experiences I've had that I hated at the time, but am now grateful that they happened.

Disclosure: I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.
