Consumer Critique: Instant Mom

I have a friend who recently adopted her second child. We also struggled to conceive our first child, and have friends who couldn't have children and chose adoption. So the book Instant Mom by Nia Vardalos (who stared in My Big Fat Greek Wedding) hit on several issues close to home. The biggest difference with her experience compared to my friends' is that the child she adopted was not an infant.

This book was a very good read. I could empathize with the fertility struggles, and the story was well-written. It was a good portrayal of one person's experiences with becoming a mom in a "non-traditional" way, and would be a good read for anyone with a friend who is currently in the adoption process, to be able to gain awareness and insight into what they are going through. Any parent will find something in the story to relate to, since parenting a preschooler has similar struggles no matter where they child came from biologically.

An especially helpful feature is a "How to Adopt" section, which includes requirements for adoption from certain areas, overviews of different adoption routes, resources for prospective adoptive parents, and more.
