Consumer Critique: Writers of the Future and Red Dragon

I recently got to read two very different books, The Red Dragon (Stories from the Golden Age) and Writers of the Future Volume 29. The Red Dragon is one of many stories written by prolific writer L Ron Hubbard. It's an easy-to-read example of pulp fiction - engaging plot, quickly-moving storyline, characters that are easy to get to know. I enjoyed it and read it through in a weekend, despite distractions from my kids.
Writers of the Future I enjoyed even more. I like science fiction and fantasy anyway - it's one of my favorite genres. Since the stories written here were all for a competition, they are quality examples of work by little-known authors. I also enjoy short stories - very easy to read with little kids in the house! Each story had a very different feel to it and tackled different futuristic themes. It's a great way to discover new authors!
