Clutter is a huge problem - there are countless books, TV shows, and workshops based around examining clutter, making money by selling clutter, how to avoid clutter or clear it out. And yet, it can be hard to find a solution that fits your lifestyle. Clutter Rescue!: Just Minutes a Day to Get Organized-Forever! is a guide from the editors of Good Housekeeping, a well-respected magazine that covers a variety of home topics. While I think "forever" is a little bold to claim, I do like that the tips break things down into simple tasks that really can be done here and there, to feel like you're making progress while working towards the larger goal of a clutter-free home.
One really nice features of the book is that it's hardcover, yet spiral-bound inside, so it lays flat well. It also highlights "ideal" ways for storage (but may involve remodeling, like open baskets on a rack in the kitchen, hanging pots, etc) for each area of the house, then moves on to room-by-room and zone-by-zone (sections within rooms) ways to clear out the house and become more organized. Along the way there are time guidelines for each zone and ways to save money. The following tips come from the bathroom section:
- Options for towel storage are widely varied: combine storage types by installing a combination towel-bar-and-shelf; roll towels into tight tubes and stack them on a shelf to store more towels in a small space; stack towels with the folded side out to make it easier to remove the one you want.
- Buy a standing cabinet with gladd fronts, or a storage tower with exposed shelves, if what you want to store is visually appealing. If you want to include a tower in a busy bathroom, pick a pyramid style, which is less likely to tip over.
- Every 6 months, go through the medicine cabinet and discard medications that are past their expiration date.
- On a monthly basis, check the levels of shampoo, conditioner, bath salts, and other products in the bathroom to see what needs to be replaced.
