If you like history and are Christian, you'll enjoy the book The World of Jesus: Making Sense of the People and Places of Jesus' Day. My husband and I enjoy history in context, making connections between different things, and this book was well worth reading from a historical standpoint. The author provides well-researched context for the Biblical events in the New Testament, making connections between historical and religious events. It's not too academic, though - it's really accessible, even for people who aren't interested in taking a really deep look, but just want a general understanding of the world in which Jesus lived.
