Time Tidbits: 5 Easy Ways Busy Moms Can Organize a Garage

If there’s anything busy moms rely on, it’s organization. It’s rare for things to stay organized for long in an environment with children, but it still takes much of the stress out of their lives. The garage is often considered as the household dumping ground, but it’s also a large space families can make a lot of use of.

Organizing the garage presents a big job. Busy moms can cut the amount of time it takes them to reshuffle the dumping ground using these five techniques.

1. Tool Hang

A simple tool hang consisting of a few hooks can work wonders for keeping the gardening tools to one side. Decide exactly what you want to hang, such as rakes, shears, and spades. Measure how long the longest implement is and grab a piece of sturdy wood. Cut it as long as you like and affix hooks to them. Now you can hang them up on your wall.

In some cases, you might need to tie rope or string around your tools to give them something to hang with. It’s a cost-effective way of dealing with the tools which won’t fit in your toolbox.

2. Shelving

Shelves always work for storing cans of paint, varnish, or whatever other home improvement products you have lying around. You can find affordable steel shelving at most home décor stores. Most shelves come with instructions. To fit them, you’ll need a drill and the screws.
What makes shelving so valuable is it makes use of space which would have been wasted. Narrow crevices and corners often go unused due to the lack of floor space. Use the wall space and you’ve automatically created additional space elsewhere.

3. Cabinets

Cabinets provide a place to store toxic chemicals and dangerous tools from young hands. They’re slightly more expensive than other forms of storage, but it’s a durable investment which will last for years. Cabinets have different methods of installation, so read the instructions carefully.

Try to choose a cabinet which comes with a way to store things on top to add a little extra storage space.

4. Filing Cabinets

Old bills, bank statements, and deeds all need a place to live. Throwing a folder filled with them on top of the old gas stove from five years ago isn’t an ideal way to store things. Purchase a metal filing cabinet for storing paper documents. Even if you don’t need this much space now, there’s room on top of the filing cabinet and in any unused draws for anything you can’t find a permanent home for.

5. Metal Hooks

Metal hooks are the ‘jack of all trades’ organization tool for the garage. Hooks fit directly into drywall and wooden beams. Suspend them where you want for hanging troublesome gardening items like hoses and extension cords.

The added advantage is you can fit them next to each other to add some extra stability for thick hoses and sprinkler systems.
