Parenting Pointers: Keeping the Car Cool

Keeping the car cool is important to both the consumer's and the car's health. So, how can car owners keep their cars cool and running well in extremely hot summer weather? Many drivers may think it important to keep the interior of their car cool for pure comfort reasons, but it is equally important to keep the engine cool to keep it from overheating.

The experts at AutoMD.com have some key tips for your readers / viewers to help keep their cars cool and running well, until cooler weather hits. Below are just a few:

1. Check / change the engine oil and filter and check all fluid levels more frequently during the summer.
2. Check the radiator coolant level. Many manufacturers recommend changing the coolant every two years. Check the owner’s manual to verify the service interval, and make sure to use the recommended type of coolant. Many of the coolants available are not interchangeable.
3. Make sure the front of the radiator is not obstructed and the fins are clean to increase airflow. Restricted airflow will reduce the radiators cooling capacity and cause the engine to overheat. Also, make sure that the radiator cooling fan is working properly.
4. Check tire pressure regularly during the summer. Tire pressure can rise as the temperature does. Low pressure creates more friction / heat and reduces MPG.
5. When planning a road trip, avoid driving during the hottest time of the day. Drive in the morning or late evening – especially if  towing a trailer.

And here are some common sense tips to prevent car owners - and their kids - from getting burned by climbing into a hot car.

1. Park in the shade or garage.
2. Crack the windows to allow heat to escape.
3. Use a sunshade for the windshield.
4. Cover the seats and steering wheel.
5. Make sure the A/C system is cool. Run the air conditioner to make sure cool air is coming out.
6. And, never leave children or pets alone in a car in warm weather. Even with the windows rolled down, the interior of a car can heat up to dangerous temperatures quickly, and can lead to serious injury, or death.
