I recently had a chance to watch two very family-friendly movies, Season of a Lifetime and Camp. Both have great lessons embedded in entertaining films that you can watch with your kids (of appropriate ages) without having to worry about them picking up negative messages.
“Camp” is inspired by true stories from camps for abused and neglected children. Eli gets paired with a disinterested investment advisor, Ken, at a summer camp for foster kids. It's a strong look at some of the serious moments of summer camp, and some of the changes that occur in the adults who work and volunteer there. It's a Dove Foundation Family-Approved movie for kids 12 and older. A portion of the proceeds from the film benefit Royal Family KIDS, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) non-profit that serves as the nation’s leading network of camps for abused, neglected and abandoned children. The film is rated PG-13 and has a running time of 111 minutes.
“Season of a Lifetime” follows Greenville High football coach Jeremy Williams as he perseveres and inspires his team throughout their winning 2010 season in the face of his progressing ALS disease. For his final season as coach, Williams’ beloved small-town Greenville Patriots battle to the playoffs and adopt his never-surrender attitude. The Atlanta Journal Constitution recently asked Williams what he hoped the film would show. He responded, “That when things get tough, you can be tough and still love.” Williams’ wife added, “I really hope that people see that, no matter what they might face in life, that through Christ, they can not only get through it but also live a happy, joyful life.”
I liked both of them. Seasons of a Lifetime would be more interesting to people who are sports fans, or who have dealt with debilitating illness. Camp is a great movie to watch with older tweens/teens, as it's free of objectionable content yet still engaging. And I like the idea of watching inspiring movies based on things that actually did happen - it makes it seem more realistic and easier to find inspiring moments in my own life.
