Parenting Pointers: Best Themes for Your Kid's Next Birthday

Children's parties are a huge event, and there are many ways to make them fun. Creative costumes, inventive snacks, fun games, and elaborate decorations can all make a party memorable and exciting. Here are some ideas to get you started on a fun party theme:

Cupcake or Cookie Decorating Party
Who doesn't love desserts? Bake (or buy) several dozen plain cookies or cupcakes, and then provide the guests with a variety of frosting colors, piping bags, candies, sprinkles, and whatever other edible decorations you can think of. There could be a contest for the most beautiful cupcake, the most creative cupcake, and the ugliest cupcake. The party's décor can follow a cookie- or cupcake-related theme. Personalized aprons make a great gift for each of the guests. Small divided boxes allow the guests to take their creations home.

Shape Party
For kids under four, a shape party can be a great way to learn and have fun at the same time. Choose a circle, square, triangle, or any other shape, and make sure all the food and decorations are in that particular shape. For a circle party, serve oranges, round dry cereal, or lollipops. Square parties can have cheese slices, graham crackers, and frozen fruit cubes. Grilled cheese or peanut butter sandwiches can be cut into any shape with a cookie cutter. Children can make crafts in the designated shape. For extra fun, have a scavenger hunt through the living room or back yard for items in that shape.

Rainbow Party
Color, color, and more color is the theme of this party. Encourage guests to wear as many bright colors as possible. Or you could also ask each child to wear a single color, then line all of the children up in ROY G BIV order for a fantastic photo op. Snacks should cover every possible color: blue corn chips, orange carrots, lemon-yellow cupcakes, purple plums, black licorice. Seltzer cocktails can be colored with different fruit juices like orange, grape, or raspberry. Decorate with stripes—the more colors, the better. For activities, the kids can watch The Wizard of Oz or other rainbow-related films. A rainbow version of musical chairs can also be fun: put brightly colored pieces of paper on the floor, play music, and when the music stops, the child standing on the white piece of paper gets a small prize or a treat.

Character or Movie Party
If your child has to watch Despicable Me every night or can recite every line from Finding Nemo, then a party with a movie theme is a safe bet. Invite the guests to dress as characters from the movie (bonus points to the grown-ups who come dressed as the villains). Decorations featuring popular cartoon characters are easy to find. Get creative with the food—what did the characters eat in the movie? The Princess and the Frog party could have beignets and jambalaya, while a Finding Nemo party can have blue gelatin with plastic fish suspended in them. For activities, the children can act out their favorite scenes, draw pictures with their favorite characters, or play games based on the movie.
