There are a lot of reasons to want to get your kids out of the house. First off, it's very healthy and important for children to be outside, using energy, and soaking in the sun. Second, it's a lot of fun for both you and your kids to go outside and spend some time playing in the great outdoors. And third, having your kids inside all the time makes them a little cuckoo, which in turn will drive you absolutely nuts! Here are a few great activities for getting your kids out of the house, into the great outdoors, and having some fun.
Traditional Sporting Activities
Most kids love traditional sports and can stay entertained for hours on end. It's pretty cheap to supply your kids with the basics in sporting equipment: give your kids a few mitts and a baseball, a hoop and a basketball, a frisbee, a soccer ball, or a football, and they'll never get bored. Leave it to kids to come up with fun new games to play with these simple, time-honored items.
Visit the Zoo
There are few better ways to spend a day outdoors than with your kids at the zoo. Zoos serve a triple purpose: first off, they're great fun. Second, they are very educational. And third, they pique your children's interest; chances are, they'll be clamoring to go back to the zoo before no time. It's also a great way to teach your kids the value of conservation efforts for animals and their habitats.
Build Something
One of the best ways to get your children outdoors is to pick a project for them to work on. Kids get enthralled with fun projects, and will spend hours on end trying to complete them. If you or another parent wants to help out and supervise, you can build a tree house, a rope swing, or a tire swing. If you just want to let the kids loose on their own, you can give them tools to make a fort or a tepee.
The fun part about these projects is that the kids have fun both building them, and then playing with them when they're complete. It brings out the creative side in your children while also giving them toys to play with.
Action Sports
Scooters, bikes, skateboards, roller blades . . . what kid doesn't like these things? Kids will rarely get bored of these toys, and if they do, there are always ways for you to spice them up: take them to a skate park, buy (or build) them a jump or ramp, or take them to a fun path for their bike. You could even try bike polo or skate tag. Kids never grow out of action sports, as long as you keep them interesting.
Most children don't need incentives or fancy gadgets to have fun outside. If you turn off the TV, give them a few cool toys and a friend or two, they'll find ways to turn your backyard into their greatest amusement park imaginable. And if you're constantly on the lookout for new outdoor activities, just partner with one of your friends, and collaborate when you decide to take the kids out. Every parent has different tricks and games to keep their kids outdoors; share your tips and tricks with friends and neighbors and your kids will be playing outside before you know it. Don't forget the sunscreen!
