If you like Shel Silverstein, you'll like this book as well. The humor is similar - childish and cute - and the line illustrations are also reminiscent of the Silverstein poetry books. Both of my girls loved hearing the poems, and my older daughter reads them by herself over and over. They were fun for me to read too, and talk about the silly things I did as a kid and the silly things my kids do now. It made a great birthday gift for them! Just to get a taste, here's one of the poems from the book:
The Adult and The Child
GROW UP!
No.I'm small and a child.
I'm meant to be silly and short and wild.
DON'T DO THAT! DO AS YOU'RE TOLD!
What!Be like you,
Tall, boring and old?
BEHAVE. BE QUIET.
STOP THAT NOW!
I can't. I'm a child. I don't know how.STOP THAT NOW!
Let me be
The size I am.
The age of silly,
With no adult plan.
You were a child.
You were like me.
What happened to you?
You don't seem free.
I'M BIGGER, KNOW MORE.
DO AS YOU'RE TOLD.
I KNOW BEST BECAUSE I AM OLD.
Old is not smarter,DO AS YOU'RE TOLD.
I KNOW BEST BECAUSE I AM OLD.
Smart is not big.
You forgot how to be silly,
And that you were once a kid.
In addition to being available as a paperback book and an e-book for Kindle, Sir Silly is also available on iTunes, for the iPad and iPhone. It will soon also be on iTunes in audio book, on which Fisher has added silliness in between each poem from Sir Silly and his good friend Billy. This is a great giggle for anyone to listen to.
