I was able to interview Mike Petrizzi, expert hair colorist and Artistic Director for Zotos Professional, AgeBeautiful.

1) What are some current hair trends for women right now?

I'm seeing a lot of shifting with ombre – while it's still immensely popular, women are beginning to have fun with those faded ends.  A lot of them are adding dramatic low-lights into the mix and playing around with the color at the ends of the hair.

2) How can women maintain hair that looks youthful and stylish without looking like they're being too trendy?

Work with what you have!  There is nothing worse than trying to force your hair into a cut, color or style that’s not right for it.  I'm relieved to see a more natural approach to hair – women are veering away from that overly extension-ed, Real Housewives of Detroit or wherever hair.  This season, women are utilizing what they have and making it work for them.

3) What are some important hair care tips to maintain health of hair?

It's important to ensure that you’re coloring your hair the way the pros color hair.  Understanding the importance of permanent hair color versus demi-permanent is a great first step in keeping your hair and the color strong and healthy.  Some people scoff at women who keep a 14 product hair regimen, but frankly, those women are the ones who in their 50’s, keep their hair looking like it did in their 20’s.

4) What do women need to consider before they dye their hair?

The key factors to consider before coloring you hair are: the condition of your hair; if it’s been previously colored or texturized, how much grey there is; do you want to cover the grey or blend the grey?; are there unwanted red tones or do you want to add some warmth?

From there, visualize your end goal and work your way back.  Let's say you have ashy medium brown hair and want a warm, buttery blonde. Determine how much grey you have and how much you want to cover. From there, you can determine which level you want to go up to. If you want to be a medium golden blonde, you can try a neutral level 8 blonde or for even more warmth a golden level 8.
