Just this week a third Tampa Buccaneers football player
was diagnosed with MRSA, an antiobiotic-resistant staph
infection, while a salmonella outbreak at a chicken plant
in California sickened hundreds with strains of salmonella
that resist multiple antibiotics.
On Tuesday, October 22, in Hunting the NightmareBacteria, FRONTLINE correspondent David E. Hoffman
(of the Washington Post) investigates the rise of
deadly superbugs that modern medicine can't treat
(including a rare look inside an uncontrollable outbreak
at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center--the
NIH--one of the nation's most prestigious research
hospitals, where 18 patients were sickened and six died).
The documentary also includes incredibly compelling
personal stories -- including the case of 11-year-old Addie
Rererich, whose rapid descent from playground scrape to
life support was every parent's worst nightmare.
