Consumer Critique: A Day with Duchess - Life Lessons from a Blind Therapy Dog

When you think of therapy dogs, you often think of guide dogs leading the blind. But there are actually dogs that fulfill many other roles, such as companionship for the elderly, reading practice for kids, seizure detection for those with epilepsy, and therapy for those with autism. Dutchess is a therapy dog who works with individuals with autism, AND stars in a new book for children, A Day With Dutchess: Life Lessons from a Blind Therapy Dog by Mark Condon.

Inspired by a true story, the book follows Dutchess and her buddy, Droopy, as they work with children at an autism center, sample treats at their favorite pet boutique and organize an adoption fair to help lonely cats and dogs find loving forever homes. Dutchess lost her eyesight in 2011, but she continues to work with children with autism, and in this book, children will learn what she does and how she makes a difference.

My girls loved the book. They love dogs, and they were amazed to find out all the things that dogs can do - and all the ways that we can help too.
