Consumer Critique: I'm a Pretty Little Black Girl

Disclosure: I received complimentary products as a thank you for this post. All opinions are my own.

It's important for girls to get positive messages about their appearance and self-worth. It can be hard in a society that seems to blast images of certain body types from every corner. It can be even harder for children whose skin and eye color don't match with many of the models they see.

Betty K. Bynum, actress, screenwriter, and journalist, is launching The I'm a Girl Collection, beginning with I'm a Pretty Little Black Girl. The books are designed to create positive images for girls of color between ages 2 and 9. Books are also planned for Latina and Asian girls, as well as "Girl in the U.S.A." I'm excited to see what apparel is coming out too, as that's another planned venture.

The book is cute and girl friendly. My girls are pretty fair-skinned white, but I still thought this book was worth reading with them so they can also get exposed to the idea that we're all beautiful, no matter what we look like. The foster daughter of my friend absolutely loves this book, since she's a black preschooler in an otherwise white family. It's just very encouraging to see an author making such an effort to boost young girls' self-esteem at a time when they're just beginning to lay the foundations.

The books can be found at Target, B&N, Books-a-Million, Indie Bound, and Walmart.
