Healthy Habits: Lowering Blood Pressure Naturally

If you have high blood pressure, there are a lot of small changes you can make that may help reduce your dependence on drugs to keep it under control. Try incorporating as many of these changes as possible if you find yourself nearing the high BP danger zone.

  • Exercise. Aerobic exercise, weight training, and yoga have all been shown to lower blood pressure.
  • Eat a healthy diet. Potassium (found in bananas, kiwi, potatoes, and spinach), yogurt (and possibly other dairy), beets, leafy greens, and root vegetables all help maintain healthy blood pressure. Eating lots of whole grains, fruits, veggies, and lean protein will also help.
  • Reduce stress. Consider meditation, a bath with Epsom salts, and deep breathing to help lower your stress level and protect your heart.
