Any parent knows that every age group has its particular challenges. My oldest is six, so I'm out of the toddler stage with her, and I think some of the tips from the book Parenting Made Easy - the Middle Years will come in handy.
I don't think you can every truly make parenting "easy" but I do think that for most families, this book can make parenting easier. The book is written by Dr. Anna Cohen, who has 20 years of experience in clinical child psychology. It's written with a "tool box" mentality - that every parent can use more tips and tricks. What I like best about the information in this book is that it's not a complicated set of rules and systems - it's little tweaks and strategies that are easy to remember and easy to implement. And if they don't work, I can try a different strategy. The book also begins with a little background into the way kids this age think, which can be helpful in understanding their behavior (even if we were kids once, we likely don't remember everything about why we did what we did).
Here are a few key tips from the book that can help you parent your "middle years" child. For more detail and tips, check out the book!
- Offer love, safety, protection, and support
- Be clear about children's responsibilities
- Respond positive to children's curiosities
- Model manners and empathy for others
- Adapt expectations to children's capabilities
