Healthy Habits: Sugary Drinks

Every February, National Children's Dental Health Month occurs to raise awareness regarding the importance of having good oral hygiene. Scheduling regular dentist visits helps children and teens jumpstart a life with healthy teeth and gums, but usually this is not enough. Other than regularly scheduled visits to the dentist every 6 months, parents need to be aware of the sugar content in many of their children’s 'healthy' drinks.

Although many juices seem to be a healthy choice for children, a single serving of 100% white grape juice, for example, contains the same amount of sugar as four donuts, around 40 grams. When a child¹s sugar intake is this high from a single serving of juice, it can cause erosion and destroy the tooth¹s enamel over time. It is vital parents look on the label and choose drinks that have a low sugar count to help prevent this and other oral problems.
