Parenting Pointers: The Sounds of Silence

It can be really hard to get an active kid to quiet down, but it's a good skill to develop - the ability to be quiet in certain situations. To help kids learn, make it a game. Make up your own sign language for common things, and then have a "no talk time out" for 5-10 minutes and see how you do. Or have kids be quiet and signal you when they think a certain amount of time is up (20-30 seconds for really young kids). You can also see how well they can move objects - large or small - without making any noises. Want an extra challenge? Have them wear socks or a headband with bells and see if they can move without ringing.
