Consumer Critique: Running with Roselle

Running with Roselle shares the story of two of the most remarkable 9/11 survivors – a blind man and his dog.

Written by Michael Hingson, the author of the New York Times bestsellerThunder Dog, he shares the story of his childhood filled with overcoming obstacles and resiliency, as he was born blind. He never let being blind stop him from things like riding a bike through his neighborhood as a kid, driving a car around the campus at Cal (where he was a physics major) as an adult, or running his own business.
Families will also learn more about Roselle, who posthumously received the American Hero Dog Award, and read about her puppyhood, her training as a guide dog and how she led Mike out of the tower.

Running with Roselle not only teaches children about living with diversity and overcoming adversity, but also illustrates the strong bond between a child and their pet – and what having a pet instills in them. It's a great story for adults and older kids to read together. My daughter is too young to read this length of book alone, but she loved me reading it to her. It's a great way for kids to learn about guide dogs, living with disabilities, and more.
