PSA: Kids in Closed Cars

It's getting warmer out, which means that the interior of cars can heat up extremely quickly. Every year, babies and children die from being trapped in a car. Some of these kids were intentionally left while the parent went into a store "just for a minute" and some were inadvertently forgotten. Don't think you could ever forget your kid? Think about how often you misplace other important things, like keys or a telephone. Any time your routine changes, you're at risk for forgetting that you have an extra passenger in the car. Here are some tips to share with your friends to make sure no kid gets forgotten:

- Put your purse in the back seat when you buckle your child in.
- Buckle the child seat in the middle for extra visibility.
- Set up a system with regular child-care providers to always call if your child is expected but not there.
- Look before you lock the door, even if you're sure you didn't have your child with you that day.

If you see a child in a car, call 911. If the child is in distress, don't hesitate to break in or send someone to alert customers in nearby businesses (for example, page over an intercom). A child has only a few minutes before they'll succumb to heat stroke.
