Healthy Habits: MediMates

Iris Shamus created the brand MyMediMates which focuses on safeguarding kids. Iris' goal is to help keep everyone informed, aware and safe whether your child suffers from a food allergy, a bee sting, asthma, diabetes, autism, or any other health related issue. I had a chance to interview her to learn more.

What was the inspiration behind MediMates?
The inspiration behind MyMedimates (and AllerMates) was my handsome boy, Benjamin.  He is my middle child, and has severe food allergies, seasonal allergies and asthma.  I started my company when he was in pre-school and I wanted to create something for kids to help protect them and teach them about their health concerns on a level that they could understand and even as a celebration of who they were.

What sets the bracelets apart from other medical alert bracelets?
For the most part it’s our loving characters.  I became the pioneer of the kid friendly health alert accessory. Kids love colorful and fun cartoon characters, and that is what communicates their allergies. It is such a simple yet unintimidating way to communicate their health concern.

What are some of the great features of the cases?
Our cases to hold epinephrine auto injectors (like Epi-pens or Auvi-Q) are insulated and help protect the medicines inside. They also contain a medical ID card making for even simpler instructions. I’m all about making health concerns easier on the parents and kids.   Many have told me, that the characters and cute patterns also help make the experience of having to carry serious medicine around at all times more comforting!

What tips can you share for parents who are dealing with food allergies with their kids, or with other diseases that require medical alerts?

Encourage your child to wear a medical alert at a young age so that it becomes second nature to them. It not only helps bring awareness to people around them but also to that child. When they are old enough, make sure that you are teaching them how to protect themselves.  For example if they have a severe food allergy – they should learn to always ask and verify if a food is safe for them and they should always remember to make sure their emergency medicine with them, just in case.
