Healthy Habits: OTC Drug Use in Pregnancy

Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate this post. All opinions are my own.

When you get pregnant, the baby is completely dependent on you for nutrition and everything else. That means that anything you consume or ingest, the baby does too, on some level. So it's really important to be aware of the potential effects of any medication on your baby.

It's hard to classify exactly what is safe and unsafe. Drugs that appear as safe on one list might be listed as unsafe on another. Dosage also matters. So it's important to consider the source of any information you see.

The CDC has a really helpful website called Treating for Two to separate facts from fiction. Among the best tips:

- Talk to your doctor if you are planning to be pregnant about the medications you are already taking.
- Don't forget to consider supplements and herbal treatments as well. They may not be drugs, but they can still affect your baby.
- Continue to stay in communication during breastfeeding, as drugs can still be transmitted to your baby through your milk.

Healthy Mama has worked with the American Pregnancy Association and MotherToBaby to help create a set of drugs that are as safe as possible for use during pregnancy. They're up front about no product being 100% guaranteed safe, but they work to formulate their products to use only ingredients with a long history of not showing harm to unborn babies. They offer a painkiller, a painkiller with a mild sleep aid, a stool softener, and heartburn relief.

I'm not pregnant or nursing anymore, but I still like the idea of using these drugs. They have the same active ingredient as standard OTC medications, and they support things I can get behind: USA production, giving back to society, and thinking green.
