Parenting Pointers: Discussing Bodily Functions

Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate this post. All opinions are my own.

Every body sometimes does things that can seem a little disgusting. While these bodily functions are inappropriate to talk about in certain contexts, little kids seem to love bringing them up at the worst times.

That's normal. Little kids are curious about their bodies, how they work, and why they do what they do. It can be difficult as a parent to figure out the best way to appropriately talk about things like burping, sneezing, and bathroom functions. It's important not to completely ignore it, though. Kids are curious for a reason, and it's helpful to answer those questions. So here are some tips for discussing these sometimes off-color (and off-odor) topics.

Let your kids be curious. If they are asking questions, answer them if possible. If the time and place are inappropriate, tell them when you'll answer the questions - and then follow through.

Use the correct words in an age-appropriate manner. It's ok if you use the word penis when talking about pee, for example.

Teach hygiene and manners while you're answering questions. For nose-picking, talk about hand-washing and stopping the spread of germs. When discussing burps, explain how to be discreet and how to politely excuse oneself.

There's a cute series called "Who Did It?" that covers peeing, pooping, farting, burping, and sneezing, explaining to young children why the body does it and also how to politely handle it. The animations are kid-friendly and the explanations are kid-appropriate for ages two through five. It even taught my six-year-old a thing or two!
