Mealtime Magic: Dara the Bow Girl

With the weather heating up, cool down in the kitchen with a homemade “Frozen” Olaf ice cream sundae.  MasterChef Junior’s Dara Yu, otherwise known as Dara the Bow Girl, joins DreamWorksTV for awesome cooking DIYs.  Follow this “recipe” for summertime fun with the family!



Step 1: Watch Dara bring Olaf to life in the DreamWorksTV kitchen.



Step 2: Test your own culinary skills at home by recreating the “Frozen” Olaf ice cream sundae, with your view own homemade ice cream.  Ingredients and instructions below!

Step 4: Don your apron and chef’s hat and try your hand at more of Dara’s favorite recipes including Magic Chocolate Shell- a great addition to your Olaf sundae – or Ice Cream Pie.  Both recipes can be found below.

“Frozen” Olaf Ice Cream Sundae


Vanilla Ice cream:
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 cup whole milk
⅔ cup sugar
¼ tsp salt
6 egg yolks
1 vanilla bean or 1 tsp of vanilla extract
Food Coloring (Light Blue and Medium Blue)
Ice Cream Maker



Marshmallow Olaf Ingredients:
-Jumbo marshmallows
-Regular size marshmallows
-White chocolate, melted
-Black licorice or Pretzel sticks
-Chocolate chips
-Candy eyes
-Carrot, cut into spear
-Black Edible Marker
-Bamboo skewers
-Small paint brush to apply white chocolate
-Paring Knife
-Toothpicks

“Frozen” Olaf Sundae Ingredients:
-Dyed Ice Cream
-Marshmallow “Olaf “
-Mini Marshmallows
-Sprinkles
-Chocolate Chips
-Sundae Dish


Instructions for Homemade Ice Cream:
-Combine cream, milk, sugar, and salt into a heavy bottom pot
-Heat until sugar is dissolved and mixture is hot to touch
-Whisking constantly, whisk ½ cup of the hot milk into the egg yolks, this is a process called tempering, this is going to slowly bring the temperature of the eggs up so they don't scramble
-Whisk the eggs back into the pot and heat on low-medium heat until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. (170 degrees on a thermometer)
-Pour ice cream base into a bowl and let cool for 30 minutes in the freezer until room temperature
-Once cooled pour into ice cream maker, churn for about 20 minutes
-Split ice cream into 2 bowls and dye ice cream to color wanted
-Freeze until hard

Instructions for Marshmallow Olaf:

-Push marshmallows through bamboo skewer

-Use melted white chocolate to secure candy eyes

-Cut a carrot into a small nose and secure with a toothpick

-Draw on Olaf’s mouth and eyebrows with black edible marker

-Add pretzel sticks or black licorice for arms

-Secure three chocolate chips on Olaf’s body for buttons



Assemble sundaes as desired, layering colored ice cream with mini marshmallows, sprinkles, chocolate chips, etc. – topped with Olaf!


Magic Chocolate Shell



Ingredients:

-1 cup chocolate chips (dark, semisweet, milk chocolate, white, etc.)

-2 Tbsp. coconut oil



Instructions:

-In a large bowl, add chocolate and coconut oil

-Place over a double boiler and stir chocolate until melted

-Let sit until chocolate has reached room temperature

-Store in an airtight container for up to a month and serve on ice cream



Ice Cream Pie



Ingredients:

-1 ½ cups graham cracker crust (about 10 sheets of graham crackers) OR your favorite cookies

-5-7 Tbsp. unsalted butter, melted

-1/4 cup sugar

-4 cups of ice cream (homemade or store bought)



Instructions:

-Preheat oven to 300 degree F

-Mix crumbs and melted butter until evenly combined

-Press crumbs into a 9-inch pie pan until tight and packed together.  You can use the bottom of a measuring cup to flatten the crust

-Bake curst for 10 minutes

-Let the crust totally cool, and then spread softened ice cream evenly over cooled crust

-Chill for 2 hours or until ice cream is solid
