Book Nook: Satanic Panic

I recently had a chance to review the e-book of Satanic Panic: Pop Culture Paranoia in the 1980s. I grew up at the tail end of this time period, and still remember people worrying excessively over certain types of games, dress, and songs being Satanic.

While I think some of it may have at one time had a sliver of truth, I think there also was a lot of over-zealousness. The Satanic Ritual Abuse Trial and the memoir Michelle Remembers helped fuel the issues, which had some very real consequences for a lot of people. There are still elements of it today, with groups being ultra-wary of fantasy fiction and games like Dungeons and Dragons.

The book took a great historical look at all of the things that contributed to the culture clash over the years, with interviews of authors and media critics, displaying the sometimes funny, sometimes tragic results of this fear of all things potentially Satanic.
