Book Nook: Win at Losing

As an award-winning sports journalist and editor, Sam Weinman has witnessed epic wins and crushing defeats. But when he tried to teach his two sons how to cope with inevitable setbacks (lost soccer games, a B on a test) and how they can be a critical part of success, nothing worked. Sam realized our winning-obsessed culture had taught them that losing is unacceptable so he sought to illustrate how we can not only overcome defeat but grow stronger from the experience.

I had a chance to read the book that came out of this experience,  Win at Losing: How Our Biggest Setbacks Can Lead to Our Greatest Gains (to be published December 20th). I love the idea of turning failures into success, not necessarily by changing the outcome, but by learning from it, and growing stronger. The book combines interviews, advice, and analyses, using experienced coaches, psychologies, and famous personalities. It helps readers redefine what success and failure really are, and helps readers use the power of struggle to find success.

Sam Weinman is an award-winning journalist and the digital editor at Golf Digest. His work has appeared in USA Today, Golf World, Yahoo! Sports, ESPN the Magazine and Sports Illustrated.
