Book Nook: Discipline that Connects with Your Child's Heart

As a parent, it's important to make sure that you're helping your children learn. That means discipline when they make mistakes. But punishment without connection isn't as effective - that's the idea behind a book I got to review, Discipline that Connects with Your Child's Heart: Building Faith, Wisdom & Character in the Messes of Daily Life.

This faith-based book is practical for any family, even those that aren't Christian (although those who are Christian will get much more out of it). The four key messages will resonate with any parent looking to build character in their kids: you are safe with me, you are loved no matter what, you are called and capable, you are responsible for your actions.

Above all, we want our kids to know that they are loved and safe. Out of that, we want our kids to realize that they are able to take responsibility, and that no one controls their actions but them. These are key philosophies I've always used in my own discipline and classroom management. This book does a good job of weaving practical advice with reflection questions to really help parents examine where they are now, and where they want to go.
