My husband is a photographer, and I'm a musician, so I was intrigued to review Real Artists Don’t Starve: Timeless Strategies for Thriving in the New Creative Age.
It can be challenging for creative professionals to make a living off of what they love. I know both my husband and myself have had people assume we'll do work for free, or seen our own or other's work stolen. This book provides a comprehensive guide for artists to create and develop a business model that will let them thrive without sacrificing their creative energy.
While this book is largely aimed at those who want to make a full-time living off of something creative - photography or other fine arts, music, writing, etc - it also works well for anyone who is trying to make a living freelancing, or for those who are looking to do it as a side hustle. The author is clearly knowledgeable, and the book gives practical advice without being too full of business jargon.
I also like how the book is open about working with others, using inspiration, taking risks, and training. It really covers all bases of being a creative professional.
If you're a creative professional looking to make sure you're getting what you deserve, this is a great book. If you aren't, please make sure that if you're reposting or sharing an artist's work that you always give credit where credit is due, and compensate people fairly for the hard work they are doing. Just because people have creative talent doesn't mean it's not still something that takes time and energy, just like a really job!
