Healthy Habits: Getting the Whole Family Active

Want your kids to do better in school this year?  All work & no play is definitely not the answer...

New studies show family fitness plays a major role in a child's education. According to Medical Daily, physically active children had bigger hippocampi as compared to their less active peers and did better in memory tests. Researchers also determined the different effects that cardio respiratory capacity, muscular strength, and motor ability have on the brain and how they influence academic performance. (Source)

Unfortunately, many parents live a sedentary lifestyle which prevents kids from fine-tuning their motor skills and strengthening their heart, lungs, and muscles.

According to family fitness experts Danny and Denise Locsin, working out with your children goes far beyond the physical benefits.

We all live busy lives and it's hard to make time for exercise but it doesn't have to be time consuming or feel like a chore. There are many fun and creative ways you can incorporate physical activity into your daily routine while spending quality time with your family.

Danny and Denise Locsin are living proof that working out as a family has many benefits. The husband and wife team built their own relationship at the gym and since then, they have dedicated their lives to teaching families how to improve personal connections through exercise. Danny, a kinesiologist, and Denise, a fitness coach, believe family fitness is key to a happy home.

I had a chance to post this interview to learn more.

Fitness is a personal goal we all strive for. We are constantly looking to reach a healthier, stronger, version of ourselves. However, accomplishing these goals is easier said than done. One way to start on a path of success is by getting the whole family involved. If the whole family is in on the activities, it can make reaching our fit goals fun and easy to achieve. Family will be there to support one another and keep motivation and commitment levels up so that your fit goals can finally be reached.

Q. What are some fun ways to get the entire family active?

A.  There are countless ways to get your family active. One idea I find easy to incorporate into my family routine is going for a walk before dinner at least once a week. A family walk gets the heart pumping while also allows for the family to reflect on their day with one another. A pre-dinner walk puts everyone in the right mind set to be ready to sit down and enjoy a meal together. If you want to kick it up a notch, go for a family bike ride or rollerblade ride. Anything that gets the blood flowing and get you to come together after a busy day can be key factors to successfully maintaining a family activity. Family pick-up games also encourage family unity and fitness. It can be any sport no matter what size family you have, you can all get together and kick a soccer ball around, throw a baseball, a football, a Frisbee. Implementing sports into your family routine can help keep kids more engaged than just a simple walk and can help moderate a healthy level of competition that will keep them seeking out a rematch.

Q. How can parents evaluate their family's current fitness level?

A. Keep records of your activities. Record your current baseline activity level and watch it grow with conscious steps to figure out how best to incorporate exercise with family time. If you keep records, you can discover which activities were favored by which family members, which were easier to incorporate into everyone’s busy schedule, and which activities had the most success in terms of fitness benefits.

Q. What are some new trends in exercise?

A.  Media has played an increasingly large role in exercise. After completing a family exercise, post it to social media to share it with your friends and family. This will demonstrate to other families how easy it is to all get involved with activities and would encourage them to make their own fun family fitness goals. Along the lines of media, there’s also a wide variety of new apps that are easy for parents to use and can help increase family activity levels. If your children are older, I encourage you to bring them to the gym and let them try out some of the new fitness classes they offer. Your children might find inspiration with one of these new trends and you’ll be back at the gym before you know it.

Q. How can parents incorporate more physical activity into their family's routine?

A. In order to have the ability to incorporate more physical activity into your family’s routine, plan in advance. Sit down with your family and lay out everyone’s schedules, find free time that everyone shares and make a commitment to all get together and engage in an activity at that time. Children will also be more interested in family activities if there is a wide variety. Switch up activities to maintain attention and interest in getting fit. Finally, embrace taking your kids outside for fun activities. The outdoors offers more opportunities for family activities as well as allows for children to reap the benefits of fresh air. With outside activities, I strongly advise parents to know their location. What’s around you that you can implement in a family routine. Is there a park nearby? How about a bike path? Even an ice cream shop to allow for the occasional incentive. Know what’s around you and use it to your advantage.

Family fitness can be easily achieved by putting in the effort to find what works best for your family’s time and interest. Staying active with your family will help you achieve your fitness goals while finding a deeper connection to those who love, support, and motivate you to keep going.
