Parenting Pointers: How to Paint a Deck

The process to painting or staining a deck can be long, tedious, and quite frankly, extremely intimidating. While a painted deck holds potential for beauty, the truth of the matter is that maintenance can present a plethora of issues that must be addressed before you even get to paint. It can seem like more of a chore than anything else; however, with our experienced painters at WOW 1 Day Painting, the road to having a stellar painted deck is now simpler and stress-free.

Painting a deck can typically be broken down into a handful of steps: preparation and repair, painting, and finishing.

Preparation
Before you begin painting, it is imperative that your surface is totally prepped. Prep involves ensuring your surface is free of debris, dust, dirt, etc., spraying the deck with a mold deterrent, replacing damaged boards, and repairing loose nails and screws. Other steps include applying a stain and sealer remover on any wood that was previously painted or sealed and applying a cleaner. When working with a cleaner, make sure to allow the product to set into the wood for 15-20 minutes before scrubbing clean and rinsing. The deck should be completely dry before any painting is done.

Painting
After you’ve prepped and primed your deck, you’ve finally arrived to the main event: painting the deck. Contrary to popular belief, painting something like a fence or a deck isn’t like a middle school art project. Some issues to be aware of when selecting the ideal coating system would be moisture, exposure to UV radiation, and coating durability. In areas like Miami, where the tropical climate welcomes hot and humid summers and warm and dry winters, architectural coatings are subject to coating degradation due to prolonged exposure to moisture, sunlight, and other elemental deterrents. Additionally, one must consider what color to paint their deck, as more vibrant colors like red or neon colors tend to fade a lot faster than others.

Finding the ideal coating system for your deck is not easy; fortunately, our expert painters at WOW 1 Day Painting provide services in Miami.

Finishing
Applying a good deck sealer is essential in making sure your paint job lasts for as long as possible. It is important to note here that while lighter finishes provides the deck’s natural texture with visibility, this also means that the surface will be exposed to more light and rain. Lighter finishes ultimately require more retouches while more opaque coatings preserve the coating for longer.
