Floating Comfort Pillow

Other than offering yourself as a middle-of-the-night babysitter, there’s only one item that friends and family can give a new mom this holiday season to help keep her from feeling like a zombie. It begins with “the gift of a great night’s sleep” on The Floating Comfort Pillow by Mediflow, the only pillow clinically proven to improve the quality of sleep. Life with a newborn doesn’t allow for much pillow time, so the few hours a mom can rest her head should be maximized.

The Floating Comfort Pillow features an exclusive waterbase technology that provides responsive support by adapting to the shape of your head and neck as you move during sleep. No matter which way you lay, your head and neck remain in proper alignment, creating a totally different kind of sleeping experience. This is especially life changing for baby-wearing moms whose bodies always ache!
Here’s why The Floating Comfort Pillow is a must-give holiday gift that will not disappoint any new mom:

  • It’s the only pillow clinically proven to improve the quality of sleep, as noted by a peer-reviewed study conducted at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
  • Benefits include deeper sleep (no more waking up to fluff your pillow!) and a reduction in neck pain
  • It’s customizable. Choose your preferred filling (fiber, foam and feather) and level of comfort – just fill the pillow with tap water until you reach your desired amount of firmness
  • Ranked #1 selling pillow in six countries (USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France and China)
  • Over 5 million sold – reaching #1 on global e-commerce platforms including Amazon, Shopify, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Alibaba with consistent 4+ Star reviews
  • Reached #1 Bestseller in Amazon Home & Kitchen during July 2017 among 24,163,959 items
Better nights of sleep lead to better functioning days for new moms – and that’s something to benefit the whole family. This holiday season, show her how much you care about her well-being with the Floating Comfort Pillow by Mediflow. The MSRP is only $49.99, but the benefits are priceless. I had a chance to do an interview with Maurice Bard, inventor of the waterbase pillow and founder, Mediflow.

Why was the Floating Comfort Pillow created?

You know the old adage, ‘necessity is the mother of invention?’ I was suffering from a whiplash injury after a car accident and walking around the house moaning and groaning, so my wife gave me a hot water bottle to put behind my neck to ease my pain. I think her ulterior ‘need’ was to stop me from groaning. Anyway, the hot water bottle followed me to bed and eventually ended up beneath my pillow. It gave the pillow a gentle motion when I moved my head and I thought to myself, “that feels kind of nice!” I wasn’t thinking that my fiber pillow was floating on water at the time; I was just thinking this is pretty comfortable. Although my wife’s water bottle was a primitive prototype, her and I went on to engineer our waterbase pillow in our basement that is now sold in over 40 countries worldwide.

Why is it better than other pillows?

I think one of the best answers to why the waterbase pillow is the most comfortable and functional pillow for quality of sleep can be found in the Johns Hopkins Medical School clinical study on Mediflow that not only found the pillow improved quality of sleep but also reduced neck pain.  The authors of the study wrote, “positive effects of the water-based pillow may be due to its ability to spontaneously conform to the position and shape of the head and neck.”  You have to look at this pillow as a sleep system where both comfort and support are equally important for better sleep.  This means you need a two-layer system to provide both comfort and support. The Floating Comfort pillow has a top layer of fluffy fiber so your head and neck sink into a lofty comfort layer and a water layer, which is the support layer.  Basically, because water is a fluid, it moves with you as you move during sleep so you are always guaranteed support without having to wake up and re-stuff your pillow for your new head position.  But also, very importantly and as noted by Johns Hopkins, the water layer can ‘conform to the individual size and shape of the user’s head.’ No other pillow can do that-- only water found in our unique waterbase can perfectly conform to the individual user. Also, because you add your own water to the pillow, you are in full control of how much support is best for you.

What are some other things new moms can do to ensure quality sleep?

Mediflow has worked with many medical sleep specialists and over the years has compiled many useful sleep tips. Here are some I find most effective:

-Schedule a 20-minute ‘Quiet Time’ before you actually go to bed.  You get ready for bed (kids tucked away and sleeping, teeth brushed, pajamas on) but you find a spot in the house where you can sit and literally turn off the mind of all the events of the day.

-During your 20-minute quiet time, in a dimly lit room, I recommend one of two activities: read a non-work or current-event related book (not on an electronic device) or listen to soft relaxing music (classical, jazz or instrumental music with no lyrics). The first five minutes your mind will still be racing, processing the day’s events, but a transition will start to take place where your novel or your instrumental music will be displacing your day’s events. You are basically switching the brain activity from processing mode to absorbing mode. The benefits of this activity go beyond just preparing you for a good night’s sleep.

-Here’s another of my favorite helpful hints.  If you wake up in the middle of the night and your mind is racing on an issue or problem and you just can’t turn it off, try taking a walk down memory lane. Think about your childhood home and try to remember the street you lived on or the walk to school and follow that process street by street and try to remember the houses and the stores you would walk by. Your walk down memory lane will start replacing the issue that your mind was grappling with.

-I got one last one for you. This one is my own invention and you may think it silly but it works well for me if I have too much on my mind. Try sleeping with your eyes wide open. It just can’t be done. Eyelids always get heavy but the key is even if your eyelids start to get heavy keep them open.  If you are aware that they have closed, re-open them. The eyelid battle is one I never win.

Wishing you all a good night’s sleep.

Maurice Bard
