“There is no greater international moment for Miami than Art Basel season, reflected in our new lineup of headline exhibitions at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU,” said Jordana Pomeroy, the Museum Director. “Our trifecta of stellar exhibitions showcases a vibrant world of art and artists: from an unprecedented retrospective of Cuban exile Rafael Soriano, to masterworks of midcentury abstraction by Latin American artists from the Museum of the Americas, as well as a survey of works collected by Univision, and recently donated to the museum. We are committed to bringing global knowledge to the doorstep of our students, faculty, and the community,” adds Jordana Pomeroy. Current headline exhibitions: Rafael Soriano: The Artist as Mystic Opens Saturday, November 4 An unprecedented examination of his life’s work, this exhibition focuses on the multiple influences that nurtured a style where, in his words, “the intimate and the cosmic converge.” Cuban painter Rafael Soriano (1920–2015) was an acclaimed master of geometric abstraction and a global figure in the twentieth-century art world. Featuring more than ninety paintings, pastels, and drawings from the Rafael Soriano Family Collection, other institutions and private collections. The exhibition at the Frost features ephemera from the late artist's Miami studio, shown for the first time. The Artist as Mystic begins with Soriano’s works in the Cuban geometric abstract style. It then moves to his transitional, experimental paintings from the 1960s and 1970s reminiscent of surrealist biomorphism. The exhibition concludes with luminous, mystical imagery from Soriano’s mature period.  Organized by the McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College in collaboration with the Rafael Soriano Foundation, the exhibition has been curated by Elizabeth Thompson Goizueta. On view through January 28 Continental Abstraction Highlights from the Art Museum of the Americas Also opens Saturday, November 4 Continental Abstraction examines the wide spectrum of social, cultural, and artistic concerns of countries across Latin America. Features more than 40 works drawn from the collection of the Organization of American States (OAS) Art Museum of the Americas (AMA), based in Washington, DC. Over 30 artists hailing from 20 different countries experiment with form and materials and investigate through an abstract lens, themes of migration, exile, poverty, freedom, and creativity. Continental Abstraction has been organized by Museo de las Artes de la Universidad de Guadalajara for the Guadalajara International Book Fair in collaboration with the AMA | Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of the American States. Guest curated by Marisa Caichiolo and Laura Ayala, University of Guadalajara. At the AMA it was coordinated by Adriana Ospina, Curator of the Permanent Collection. At the Frost Art Museum, it was coordinated by Maryanna Ramirez/Manager of Strategic Initiatives, and Klaudio Rodriguez/Curator. On view through February 18 The 14th Annual Breakfast in the Park Daniel Joseph Martinez Sunday, December 10 (9:30 a.m. - Noon) Each year since 2004, the museum has welcomed guests to enjoy a complimentary breakfast, a lecture by a noted sculptor, and guided tours of the Sculpture Park and exhibitions. This event is free and open to the public (rsvp required). This year, Los Angeles-based Daniel Joseph Martinez takes the stage as guest speaker. For more than two decades, Martinez has tackled questions of race, identity, and the body in his multidisciplinary work. Martinez has represented the U.S. in 11 biennials worldwide, including the Venice Biennial, Mexico City Biennial, and two Whitney Biennials. His sculpture graces the entrance of the museum (A Meditation on the Possibility of Romantic Love; or, Where You Goin' with That Gun in Your Hand: Bobby Seale and Huey Newton Discuss the Relationships between Expressionism and Social Reality Present in Hitler's Paintings). The 14th annual Breakfast in the Park is an official Art Basel event, presented in partnership with West Kendall Baptist Hospital. Reflections of the Americas: New Acquisitions from the Collection of Univision Communications Opening Reception Saturday, Oct. 21 This major donation to the Frost Art Museum FIU by Univision Communications of 57 artworks features serigraphs, paintings and mixed media works by forty artists and masters from throughout Latin America and the United States, including: Cundo Bermudez, Coqui Calderon, Humberto Calzada, Nayda Collazo-Llorens, Antonia Guzman, Wifredo Lam, Jose Perdomo, Rafael Soriano, Fernando De Szyszlo and Wladimir Zabaleta. The artists in this collection are from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, the United States, Uruguay and Venezuela. This exhibition will feature 45 of these works, by 36 of the artists. On view through January 3
