Thrifty Thinking: Does Your Card Have Travel Insurance?

According to a new poll, about 4 in 10 Americans (40%) are unclear whether their primary credit card offers any travel insurance benefits, while InsureMyTrip researchers say benefits vary significantly and card users may have difficulty evaluating the scope of coverage.
The report by InsureMyTrip Research was designed to help travelers make more informed decisions. In addition to conducting a poll of 2,092 respondents, insurance experts tested and reviewed nearly 100 credit card policies to compare variations of travel insurance benefits and found coverage, if available, varies significantly based on card company.
“One big concern is when travelers assume their credit cards offer trip protection coverage but do not check in advance of a trip. Travelers really need the specifics of what their credit card may —or may not cover — including exclusions and restrictions, because our study found significant limitations with the trip cancellation benefits available from card companies when comparing them to benefits available under comprehensive travel insurance plans,” said InsureMyTrip Product Manager Lynne Peters.
