Book Nook: Charming Kids Books from Simon & Schuster

Even though my kids are getting a little older, I still love to review picture books. They're fun to read, they're great to keep around for when younger kids are in my house, and my girls still enjoy them from time to time! I was happy to receive several new titles from Simon & Schuster.

Pillowland! Written by Laurie Berkner & Illustrated by Camille Garoche
Laurie Berkner was called "the Adele of the preschool crowd" by New York Times. She's a well-known kids' music artist with positive lyrics and sound. This book pairs her lyrics with peaceful illustrations. The art is imaginative and perfectly appropriate to invoke comfortable pillows and warm, soft blankets. It's an awesome bedtime story to help kids see sleeping as a new adventure, not something to fight.

In Your Hands by Carole Boston Weatherford; Illustrated by Brian Pinkney
I grew up with Love You Forever - and this book is the same tone. With very loving words and a look towards the future of her son, it's a great book for any African-American boy. It's appropriate for any kid to read, but with the context of the line "Black lives matter" it's naturally much more appropriate as expressing parental love to a black son. The illustrations are bright and positive, and the text is hopeful and affectionate, full of dreams for the young son.

Small Walt by Elizabeth Verdick & Illustrated by Marc Rosenthal
For some reason I'm always amused with books that personify vehicles - The Little Engine that Could and Mike Mulligan's Steam Shovel for example. This is another book with the same tone. It's full of onomatopoeia, which is always enjoyable for young kids, and the positive encouragement of affirming statements makes a positive refrain. It echoes the idea that many books show - size doesn't matter, and little guys can do big things. For kids who love big vehicles, this will be a fun addition to the bookshelf.
