Contest: Costa Smeralda Literary Prize

The Costa Smeralda Prize is the first literary recognition entirely dedicated to the sea as a cultural, scientific, ecological and economic – regional as well as global vital motor. The ceremony will be held on the 28th April, as the conclusive day of the prize. It will be shared with local authorities, in the context of discussions and social actions, while enhancing the protection of marine environments. Launching the local tourist season and celebrating the founding date of the entire Sardinian Region on the horizon of a decisive change, which promises to break new ground in accordance to specified themes that are important to the territory, the country and the whole planet.

"The sea to be told and protected: it is in this dimension that essays, novels and research capable of concretely promoting greater respect for the sea resource will be selected and rewarded. The meeting between authors, innovators, personalities and testimonies around and for the sea want to rise a creative act in itself, in an attempt to hit and mark the hearts of those who participate on site, via streaming or through national and international partners - explains Beatrice Luzzi, artistic director of the award. - There are dozens of works already sent to us by the publishing giants as well as by independent publishers” launching the horizon of a Costa Smeralda Prize as a reference point for literature of the sea and the international community of the sea".


The Jury will be made up of important names from around the world in the cultural and scientific field, such as the honorary President Donatella Bianchi (leader of Linea Blu and President of WWF), Umberto Broccoli (writer, author radio-television host, and former superintendent of Cultural Heritage of Rome Capital, underwater archaeologist), Alessandra Sardoni (writer, linguist and journalist at La7), Mario Tozzi (CNR researcher, scientific populariser, former president of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and its marine areas), and Alessio Satta (researcher and President of the MedSea Foundation, protecting the sea and its coasts, for the protection of biodiversity and adaptation to climate change, which will operate as a permanent scientific observatory, also in the context of the award).

There will be three prize categories: Fiction, Non-fiction, Blue Innovation (to be assigned to an INNOVATOR – researcher, entrepreneur, or administrator – who has been able to take concrete steps to protect the sea); and a Special Prize, awarded to one of the winners of the three categories, chosen by the public during the ceremony.
The prizes will consist of a monetary contribution and a piece of art. The prize ceremony, attended by internationally renowned people, will take place on the 28th April, a significant day to the Sardinian people, when they celebrate the remembrance of the Sardinian Revolution in 1794 when Sabaudi officials were forced to flee from Cagliari.

The award will be preceded by a weekend with a high social impact dedicated to environmental sustainability (21-22 April 2018). Associations, residents, students, consortium members and the Muncipality will all be involved in the reclamation of the shores from plastic. From a collective gesture to an artistic performance: Plastic from the coast turns into Plastic Art, the work created through a collaboration with local artists and with the MedSea Foundation, will be on display for the prize ceremony.

The ceremony marks the start of an important season of events and themes. Between 28th – 30th April 2018, Costa Smeralda will be a theatre for debates, meetings, emotions, testimonies and concrete proposals around and for the seaa true international happening to trigger dialogues with those who are promoters of stories and projects regarding the sea in a more authentic and aware way.

The Costa Smeralda Consortium has been committed since its establishment in 1962 to safeguarding the environment and the sustainable development of a piece of Italian coast that the entire world envies. The consortium has created the literature prize, to focus the attention of the public, the literary world, the political world and operators on the sea, an inestimable commodity; a necessary element for climate regulation, a renewable energy supplier, raw material of the blue economy, a magnet for people and cultures and last but not least, inspirer of the best literature.
