Parenting Pointers: Traveling with Little Kids

Carter Nash Hellman and his twin brother Tucker Ford Hellman who are 6-year old entrepreneurs who have become young travel and food experts. Along with their parents, they are the co-founders of their brand The2Woodies and Woodies Goodies, a new food company that develops products inspired by flavors that Carter and Tucker discover on their journeys. Their first product is Woodies Goodies Maple Apple Butter, which was launched officially in the Fall of 2017 and sold in 4 grocery store chain and has become the #1 New Release in Sandwich Spreads on Amazon.

From an early age (9 months), they took their first trip to Mexico and have been to over 12 countries and 35 cities (many multiple times), since then. Through their travels, the boys have learned new food and cultures by meeting dozens of locals (both adults and kids), from chefs, cooks, farmers, fishermen, dancers, craftspeople, etc. who have taken them out to see the land, learn a new skill and taste all different foods and flavors.

I had a chance to do an interview to learn more.

What do you love about traveling? It’s so exciting for us to see new places and cultures.  We also really like meeting new people who live where we visit because they are always so happy to share with us what they know, and what they like to do and eat.  We always ask adults what it was like to grow up there, and what they did and ate as kids.  We love to eat, so we love trying out new foods, or even the same type of foods that we know but are made or eaten differently depending on the place – like French Fries or noodles!  Did you know that people in Holland eat their fries with mayonnaise and peanut sauce, and people in England eat their fries with fried fish (Fish and Chips), and people in France like to eat their steak with fries (Steak Frites)?

We always like exploring activities that you can only do in those places – like surfing, riding camels, learning how to make leis and hula dance or touching an iceberg in a glacier lagoon.  We also love to imagine that we live in the place we visit when we are there.

How do your parents help you adjust to new places on your trips?
Our parents always bring some things from our bedroom like our bed sheets, sound machine and night light turtles, which helps us get a good night’s sleep.  We make sure to bring our baby giraffes (note:  stuffed animals), and our cozy travel hoodies that our mom had created for us to use on the plane or car, which helps us sleep.  When we get enough rest, we have lots of energy for everything!  Also, whenever we go to Europe or a place that is very far away, we take a flight that lands in the morning when we get there so we can sleep on the plane and arrive with a full day ahead.

What's fun about trying new foods?
Looking for new foods is also a great way to learn about the local culture and people who live there.  If you meet anyone local – whether it’s a taxi driver, or someone who works in the local stores – just ask them what they love to eat that’s local, and where they like to go to get it.  People who are visiting also love to share what they enjoyed eating too, so you can meet people from all over the world by looking for new foods!

Also, we like to see where foods come from when we travel, so not just restaurants.  We love seeing foods that are different colors and shapes and experience how they taste.  Sometimes, it doesn’t taste at all like what you think it would.  We’ve visited a few farms and orchards in Hawaii with a chef who has now become our friend.  He has introduced us to different fruits, like the star fruit which is yellow and actually looks like the shape of a star, and the lilikoi fruit which looks sweet to us on the outside but is a little sour on the inside.  We have also gone into the rainforest to pick ingredients like baby taro leaves and wild bananas that our chef friend would use to make a new food dish for us.  So trying new foods can be a great adventure with new friends!

If you knew a kid who didn't want to try something new, what would you tell them?
We like to say, “Free Your Mind!” which means to let your imagination be open to what you can do.  We went ziplining with a good friend who had not done it before, so she was scared.  We told her that we would go first or even at the same time together, but we asked her to just try it one time.  We also told her that we were a little scared too at first, but seeing a kid who was even smaller and younger than us try it helped us be brave and want to do it more.  We loved it so much, that we have now done ziplining 4 times!  That’s why we also get excited to try new things first because it helps other kids see how great something they never even knew about could be.  You won’t really know until you try it!
