I recently had a chance to review Carissa's Law. At 18, Carissa is trying to navigate the world between childhood and independent adulthood. As an added challenge, she was born with spina bifida. While she's trying to figure out college life, she feels a calling to change things for the coming generation. At the same time, she's managing her own health and exploring a relationship with Isaac, who has his own dreams. Relying on her faith in God, Carissa works through her challenges to find out what's right for her own life.
The author of the book knows quite well the challenges of living with spina bifida. Misty Boyd was born with the birth defect where the spine and spinal cord don't form properly. Despite a slim survival prognosis, she has lived into adulthood and been married to her husband for 10 years (for a total of 19 years together). Her experience makes the book really come to life. It's authentic in its portrayal of one person's experience with spina bifida, and the protagonist shares the author's faith in God as the center of her life.
The book is currently available for pre-order and will be available May 14th.
