Book Nook: Memories in Dragonflies

It can be hard to read memoirs that involve loved ones dying - but it can also be cathartic and healing, supporting us in our own grief, or giving us strength for when we have to deal with similar situations.

I recently had the chance to review Memories in Dragonflies, a book about one woman's journey when her mother is diagnostic with pulmonic fibrosis, a disease in which scar tissue forms in the lungs, inhibiting breathing. Author Lannnette Cornell Bloom quit her job as a nurse to become her mother's caretaker. While she has the beautiful gift of time with her mother, it also leads to unexpected moments.

The book brings up the idea of "mindful dying" - of being present in the process of leaving this earth. Through reflection and love, the process doesn't have to be something to be feared, but something to be experienced as another stage, something that has its own beauty.

Whether or not you've gone through or are going through a similar experience, this book provides an inspiring look at being mindful and appreciating this stage as part of the journey of life.

Lannette Cornell Bloom is passionate about bringing simple joys to others. As a Registered Nurse and health practitioner of more than 32 years, Lannette has seen first hand the need to care for others, both emotionally and physically. When her mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness in 2003, she came to understand how critical it is that we talk about death in a more positive way and see that emotional healing is possible through mindful choices. She now shares her story and that wisdom in her book, Memories in Dragonflies, Simple Lessons for Mindful Dying.

She believes in the trickle-down effect; helping someone so that they in turn are able to help someone else in need. She tries to give as much and as often as she can, everyday using this positive energy to nurture both herself and those she helps. Lannette fosters creativity in others and uses creativity in all aspects of her life. She believes in celebrating life to the fullest no matter what your situation.
She currently lives in La Jolla, CA with her husband and two pugs.
