For the over half million children in Minnesota living in low-income homes, the cost of back-to-school shopping is a big burden. During the month of August, the Twin Cities Salvation Army and Morrie's Automotive teamed up to help Minnesota families in need by collecting backpacks at Morrie’s locations across the state.
On August 15th, Morrie’s is delivering approximately six thousand new backpacks to the Twin Cities Salvation Army. During the event, local children will select their new backpack and fill them with supplies needed for the upcoming school year.
According to the 2017 Huntington Backpack Index, in the last decade, the cost of school supplies has risen 88 percent for elementary students, 81 percent for middle school students and 68 percent for high school students.
While many of the people The Salvation Army serves are working, most do not have extra money for new backpacks and supplies for their children. The backpacks collected across the Twin Cities will make a real difference in the lives of Minnesota children, so they can start school feeling like they fit in and can focus on what’s important: learning, making friends, and participating in activities.
