Acclaimed author David Michael Slater weaves a humorous and heartfelt tale that underscores the timely lessons of tolerance, acceptance and compromise; something our country needs more than ever. With gorgeous illustrations from illustrator Michelle Simpson, Hanukkah Harvie vs. Santa Claus is a meaningful story that children (and adults!) of all ages will enjoy.
I had a chance to interview the author to learn more.
Why did you decide to write this book?
I've always enjoyed the idea that there's Jewish counterpart to Santa. A few years ago, when Hanukkah and Christmas landed on the same day, I had the thought that they might run into each other in the same home -- so I decided to tell the story of how that might play out.
What do you like most about writing?
Two things: I love the thrill of arriving at the end of a story that I never saw coming, and I love interacting with my readers, especially young ones.
What do you hope readers take away from the story?
The simple message that, regardless of our differences, we can all get along. Children seem to have no trouble with this idea -- and in fact it's a child in the story that makes Santa and Harvie see the light.
