Thrifty Thinking: Smart Shopping Tips for December

“December gift shoppers can't let their haste for a last-minute deals overwhelm caution, especially with their financial information," said Brittney Mayer, credit strategist at Cardrates.com. "Consumers should practice safe shopping habits to help protect their personal information from falling into the wrong hands this holiday season."

Smart Prep for Safe December Shopping

  • Use a trusted retailer when shopping online
Look for web addresses that begin with “https” and display the “lock” icon in your browser window; if it looks fishy, don’t give them your financial information

  • Use a virtual credit card number:  Virtual credit card numbers protect your real account information and can be set to only allow purchases with specific retailers

  • Use credit cards with return protection:
To get your money back if the merchant refuses a return on a defective product

  • Use a credit card with fraud protection: Cards with $0 Fraud Liability won’t make you pay for unauthorized purchases; check your cardholder agreement to see your liability
  • Check for unauthorized transactions These can be signs of card fraud. Notify your card issuer immediately if this happens to minimize the damage
