As an avid entrepreneur, April became interested in owning a company like GrandBox when she started a volunteer group at her church to support residents at a nursing home in Nebraska. The group paired volunteers with the residents of the nursing home to spend time with them and participate in activities. April also moderated Bingo for the residents and treated them to candy and baked goods as winning rewards. She saw how happy the seniors were about the experience and thought, "wow, wouldn't they love to receive other goodies on a regular basis from loved ones?"
April discovered GrandBox as part of her research to start a subscription box business for seniors. She approached the owners of the company about a potential purchase. “GrandBox had established a strong product and brand. I saw tremendous potential for growth. The timing was perfect for all parties and now I am the proud owner of GrandBox,” she explained.
As the new owner, April is excited about growing and diversifying the products that seniors receive in their boxes. She also plans to increase her presence on social media as she wants more people to discover the joy GrandBox can bring to the seniors in their lives. A happy customer had this to say, "My mom LOVES her GrandBox and was on the verge of tears, it meant so much to her. GrandBox impacts people's lives, no matter how far apart you are."
I had a chance to interview April to learn more.
Why was GrandBox created?
GrandBox was created to provide a way for loved ones to send care packages to grandparents. They may live close by or far away. It is a quick and convenient way to send them a smile every month. Friends in Chicago were sharing stories about their grandparents and how they missed them and the idea of providing a monthly gift box was born in 2014.
Why did you decide to take over ownership of an existing subscription company instead of creating your own?
I bought Grand Box because they had a strong brand and they were serving the demographic I am passionate about. I have volunteered many hours at nursing homes and have seen how special it is when seniors are remembered. It also turned out to be perfect timing for all parties and a win-win for everyone. The previous owners were getting ready to embark on a new adventure and I was eager to get started. Buying an existing subscription box business saved me a lot of start up time versus starting my own. Processes were in place and many of basics of the business had been developed.
What's your favorite part about being involved in GrandBox?
My favorite part of GrandBox is two-fold:
1. I love knowing I am sending out hundreds of smiles every month and the recipients will enjoy getting a gift in the mail.
2. I am honored to share in facilitating memories between family members. We offer every subscriber the ability to add 5 pictures & a personal note to their box every month. I print all of the pictures & letters and hand pack the boxes to ensure they arrive at their proper destination.
If you haven't tried GrandBox for your loved one it's easy to sign up and we offer a wide variety of options ranging in month-to-month subscriptions or 12 months prepaid. You control the subscription. www.mygrandbox.com
