1) APPLIANCES - BUY NOW: During September and October, manufacturers release new models of popular appliances and major retailers are eager to clear the way for the latest products (kind of like cars). You can find discounts on washing and drying machines, ovens, and dishwashers by as much as 40% off during Labor Day weekend. Check out stores like Best Buy and Lowe’s for good deals.
2) ELECTRONICS - DO NOT BUY NOW: According to Flipp’s Back-to-School consumer spending survey, more than 1 in 3 parents purchase a smartphone for their child as part of back-to-school shopping this time of year. But what they really should do is wait until Black Friday to get the best deals on electronics. The only “Buy Now” I recommend is tablets - the latest models come out in September, making Labor Day a great option.
3) OUTDOOR LIVING ITEMS - BUY NOW: The demand for patio furniture wanes after Labor Day. During the Labor Day holiday sales, retailers take 70% to 90% off outdoor dining and leisure furniture, as well as décor and appliances. Shop sales at Kohl's, Kmart, and Overstock to score a colorful hammock or a glorious mermaid-shaped fountain for less. Retailers like Home Depot and Lowe's will have a good selection of grills on sale too - up to 75% off.

OUTDOOR GEAR - BUY NOW: Labor Day weekend is the best time to get deals on outdoor gear. Specialty retailers such as REI, Backcountry.com, and Dick's Sporting Goods will offer savings on outdoor products such as camping essentials, bicycles, kayaks, and water sports gear. Deals will range from 30% to 50% off, on average, with some clearance goods marked at nearly 60% off.

4) MATTRESSES - BUY NOW: Three day weekends are the best time of year to get a mattress. Since Labor Day is the last 3 day weekend of the year, you can score a great deal on one! Purple.com has already rolled out its Labor Day deal running now through Sept. 10 in which customers can add on a free set of sheets and two pillows with any mattress purchase.
However, sheet and towels are a “do not buy now” - January white sales are the best time to buy sheets and towels, so skip the sheets and towels sales section right now if you can wait.

5) ORGANIZATIONAL ITEMS - BUY NOW: Retailers are offering discounts and free shipping on baskets, storage bins, and other organizational items targeting the back-to-school crowd. Even if you don't have any students in your family, you can still take advantage of the deals and Marie Kondo your home on a budget!
