“Henry’s Mysterious Voice” is an illustrated children’s book that takes readers on an adventure with a tiny brown mouse named Henry as he explores the outside world and discovers all that it has to offer. Along the way, Henry encounters a voice that guides him throughout his journey and calms his fears of the unknown.
Author Nancy Hurley felt the need to let children know that there is life outside their homes to be discovered and that the Holy Spirit will always guide and protect them from danger. Nancy hopes to inspire children to experience all the world has to offer – just as the little mouse Henry did.
“My goal is to have children as well as adults know that the Holy Spirit is with them in all they do and attempt to do,” the author said.
“Henry’s Mysterious Voice” can help readers develop their spirituality as well as improve their basic reading and vocabulary skills. Young readers will enjoy learning that the Lord was always with Henry during his exciting adventure exploring the world around him.
I had a chance to interview the author to learn more.
- Why did you decide to write this book?
I felt the urge to write about how life decisions can being fear and uneasiness within a person – child or adult. Like the first day of school, the first day at the new job, handling an illness, bringing a new baby into this world, facing danger, or just wanting to be happy. Each person needs to know there is a Voice that will listen and follow him or her while providing love and protection.
- How can a children's picture book be instrumental in explaining spiritual concepts?
Book illustrations can and should pull the reader into the scene being talked about, bringing life to what is happening and being said. The message is visualized through the illustrations.
- What are other ways that parents can make religious ideas easier to understand?
Read a Bible story, discuss it with your child then have the child draw a painting depicting what the story was about then have him or her discuss the drawn picture so that the message of the story is learned on his or her level of expertise. Parents can also create pictures of the story in the child’s mind or on paper so the child can visualize what the story and message is saying to them.
