Parenting Pointers: Children and Screens Digital Workshops

With the current pandemic forcing families to dramatically increase their screen time, parents want answers about how this new “digital” quarantine will affect their children both in the short and long-term. And, they are looking for tips on managing their kids’ screen time while they are working at home. Leading research institute, grantmaker and convener, Children and Screens: Institute of Digital Media and Child Development, is pleased to announce a series of interactive virtual workshops featuring leading pediatricians, child psychiatrists, psychologists, neuroscientists, educators, and parenting experts. Open to all, these Zoom webinars will feature candid insight, conversation, and advice from an array of experts and will offer attendees the opportunity to glean useful tips and ask specific questions of our panelists about the impacts of screen time and online education on toddlers, children and adolescents.

The workshops are organized into three different developmental age groups:

EARLY CHILDHOOD: TUESDAY, APRIL 28 (12:00pm-1:30pm EDT)
Geared towards the parents of children ages five and younger, this workshop will be hosted by renowned pediatrician, editor and researcher Dimitri A. Christakis, MD, MPH, who serves as editor-in-chief of JAMA Pediatrics and Director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development at Seattle Children's Research Institute. He’ll be joined by a distinguished panel of experts in the fields of media, parenting, family and human development for a discussion about the role of screens in early childhood. MID-CHILDHOOD: WEDNESDAY, MAY 6 (12:00pm-1:30pm EDT)
Geared towards the parents of K-8 students, this workshop will be hosted by pediatrician and immediate past president of the American Academy of Pediatrics Colleen Kraft, MD, MBA, FAAP. She’ll be joined by a panel of distinguished experts in the fields of child psychiatry and educational psychology for a discussion about managing elementary and middle school-aged kids on and off-screen during a quarantine. ADOLESCENCE: TUESDAY, MAY 12 (12:00pm-1:30pm EDT)
Geared towards the parents of teenagers, this workshop will be hosted by child and adolescent psychiatrist Paul Weigle, MD, who has served on the board of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Media Committee since 2003. He’ll be joined by a panel of experts in the fields of child psychiatry, psychology and adolescent development for a discussion about healthy screen habits for teenagers during the pandemic.
